TRENTON, N.J. – The Higher Education Student Assistance Authority (HESAA) is now accepting applications for help in repaying the student loans of eligible New Jersey attorneys who agree to serve full-time as a prosecutor or public defender in New Jersey for at least three years. “We are pleased to offer these grants to encourage qualified attorneys to serve the public,” said David J. Socolow, Executive Director of HESAA. “This program promotes the fair and equal administration of justice in our state, by helping New Jersey public servants continue their legal careers while managing their student loan debt.” This year, HESAA successfully applied for a grant of nearly $50,000 from the John R. Justice Student Loan Repayment Program administered by the U.S. Department of Justice. By securing this federal grant, HESAA will be able to fund student loan repayment for up to 18 public service attorneys – nine public defenders and nine state prosecutors. Eligibility includes a three-year commitment from each new applicant to remain in their role. New Jersey’s application for the John R. Justice Student Loan Repayment Program is now open and the deadline to apply is December 14, 2018. “We encourage all of New Jersey’s public defenders and prosecutors to explore this loan repayment opportunity,” said Socolow.
